My Reactions to Reactions

I am fundamentally against blotting out any comments as I do not mind any amount of criticism, ridicule, etc. But some of the comments here lately have become so bland, inane, boring and irritating that I am loosing interest in going through all of them so as to reach a few interesting ones. So I am instructing my people to throw out all those barking dogs who do not have an ability to bite.

1.”If the path is beautiful, ask where it leads… but if the destination is beautiful, don’t ask how the path is.”
Ans: Superb.

2. When you were schooling in St.Mary’s, Secunderabad, did you ever peep into the adjacent St.Francis Girls School?
Ans: That’s the only thing I used to do.

3. Can we show internal motivation of characters through camera language?
Ans: That is the purpose of camera language.

4. Can a director stage a scene just with set properties and no characters?
Ans: See “Final Destination”.

5. Why do you still follow old rules in camera language?
Ans: There’s no such thing as old rules and new rules. It’s just your individual choice of how you want to see a specific shot.

6. Would you like to make a film on transfemoral amputees?
Ans: No.

7. Can you write something on time management?
Ans: I love this one dialogue from Anil Kapoor’s “Tezaab”… ‘Waqt rehta nahin, nikaalna padta hai’.

8. Define a genius?
Ans: Me! …………….. Just kidding…………. Then maybe I am not ……. Then maybe I am ….

9. Selvar Mani in Sarkar screams ‘Muruga’ before he dies like Gandhi said, “Hey Ram”.
Ans: That was exactly the brief I gave the actor who played Selvar Mani.

10. How come all your villains follow Gandhi?
Ans: It’s not because I am against Gandhism, but it’s because many bad men usually operate from the shelter of either God or someone like Gandhi.

11. What is the best book of Fredrick Forsyth?
Ans: It’s a toss between “The Day of the Jackal” and the “The Devil’s Alternative”.

 12. What is the difference between a dictator and a director?
Ans: A dictator orders and a director guides. Having said that Most directors I know want to play the director rather than direct the players.

13. You fuck films because you want to be in control, you make love to a woman because you want to make her happy too and you have sex in this blog because you don’t have any feelings and hence zero consequences. Am I right?
Ans: Bang on.

14. “The sound Dwarak has achieved is beyond my imagination”. This sentence has no worth if Agyaat does not become a success.
Ans: If AGYAAT fails the responsibility will be solely on me as Dwarak and others worked towards my vision and my briefing. So he or anybody is not a party to my decisions of how I am making Agyaat or any other film in totality. So irrespective of AGYAAT’s success, Dwarak’s sound is already a super success for me.

15. Hi Ramu, you are still sounding the same guy I knew in college.
Ans: Hi Paripurna, yes, except that I got worse. How you been?

    Respected Ramuji,

Thanks to this wonderful blog, and that ‘Camera as PEN’ imprint of yours, that I got zapped with one aspect…Ajay Devgan’s goggles!

Sound and silence, man for some short films I had no funding for music and still thought with natural effects of sound I could manage but it feels inspiring to know that dimension.

I post pond my short film shoot children shooting. Got inspired by set-property and staging. It helped me to look at staging the actors, camera language in all together in a very novel way! I am rich by that post and proud that what ever I shoot will be trapped in time. Cannot thank you enough.

Simple comment like the whole purpose of camera language is to show internal motivation…not only amuses me but also challenges me as to the material I have with scripts and how I can make it visually dramatic.

Thanks to your blog and internet, people like me are able to connect and learn.

    Thank you boss!

  2. surap_parus says:

Hey I am at least became second one to post my reply.. Shalini ha ha ha.. u bit late

  3. Yes, I think over time, people have got habituated to your ‘in the face’ replies and so they ridicule or criticize you less now, quite less.

So, In a way, it has become boring for you to answer straight questions ?!?

  4. prerak_shah says:

Agree with ruchi’s comment, initially there was a shock value when you stated blogging, ur reaction to reactions was a huge hit. Since the shock value has fade away, people stopped criticizing or even ridiculing you.You thought, you find people boring but it’s probably ‘ulta’. You gotta come up with another shock, something like a ‘tough from outside-soft from inside’ kinda image…

  5. Hi Ramu, Liked your pretext. But you gotta pay attention to see who’s actually barking. Don’t block everybody. You know what I mean.

  6. Ur Reactions to Our Reactions are not so attractive this time………..
The problem is not in the answers surely its with questions(?)..

May i know how can i post a question to u?

  7. If the path is beautiful, ask where it leads… but if the destination is beautiful, don’t ask how the path is…
but, do we appreciate or enjoy the beauty of the destination (achievement) with the same intensity once we reach it? I seem to lose interest once I achieve something.

  8. Arun D Khilnani says:

    Hi RGV,

Is it the love for your work that makes you this good at it, or your intelligence and will-power ?

  9. Vaishak Nambiar says:

    hi ramu,
Will you work with A R Rahman again….?

Can you write anything about your combination with Manirathnam ?

Did ‘butch cassidy and sundance kid’ inspire you to write the story of ‘thiruda thiruda’ ?

Were you present in the sets of ‘ Thriuda thiruda’ ?

You have stolen the ‘title scene’ of Mani’s ‘Mounaragam” for making ‘Kshanakshanam’ title scene but you never said anything about that…somebody asked you that how did you conceive that scene. You answered something like ‘ with my love for sridevi”….

Can you write something about manirathnam …?

‘Daud’ is a ‘direct-lift’ from the movie ‘ Romacing the stone’. will u agree with this statement ?

    regards,

  10. aneel dasari says:

Hi Ramu, I was 12 when your first film “Siva” was released. I was started analyze the cinema then onwards. It has been continuous still…. .So If i would like to film a cinema on you, then could i get your appointment to discuss your character in detail…?

  11. aneel dasari says:

Hi Ramu, You are making films on mafia and Devils, Did u get bored by filming only on two concepts ? You will get more thrill if you touch more concepts other than mafia & Devils!! .There could be a chance once in your life “You will ask yourself” Damn !! I have been wasting my entire life by filming only on mafia & Devils.

  12. I find it extremely challenging to create a 2 minute short film and still create an effect compared to making a full length feature film.

  13. Ramu

One of my friends said “we should work towards something in life that we are passionate about.,….and if u ask me how will we know we are passionate about something….then think abt it…..if u know u wont get paid rest of u r life by doing a Job that you want….and still be happy…then u found it…that is something that you need to do in life…it may be anything…..dance, singing, cooking or anything”

    Do you agree?

  14. ”If the path is beautiful, ask where it leads… but if the destination is beautiful, don’t ask how the path is.” Ram it was me, who wrote that and i am thrilled after seeing ur response for that. Thanks…..ok now that u have written a prologue, from now on i will stop barking and instead write something substantial(yes i admit i was a barking dog and i have no qualms in admitting it)

Ps: It was so nice of u to say it to make me understand, just see the transformation of this naughty person from now on.

  15. I want to change my name now, but u know this cant happen, so dont mind me commenting from this username.

  16. Pradeep Maddy says:

    Sir,
Do u think Actors having theatre background perform much better than the other?

  17. Ashvin Sagar says:

I have been waiting for a blog on Nishabd for long..I know it should come spontaneously and not writing it for the heck of it, but still awaiting….
I have seen Nishabd 30 times or more so far and seen it thrice back to back the same day…!! I never felt the movie was boring, but media ridiculed the movie and criticized Amitabh for doing that character, but I find no reason why he shouldn’t…!! can you share your thoughts about NISHABD and it’s idea….I know the concept isn’t unique…but doing that film in Hindi with Amitabh certainly is unique…his costumes, his body language(the way he cleans his camera lens)….his attention to detail and JIYA disappearing after a particular scene was something really unexpected and in the climax Amitabh returns home and responds –Marne gaya tha and then Main Jiya ki yaadon main kuch aur din jeena chahta huin….he blushes when sharing Jiya’s photographs with Nazar and so many other things which certainly deserve to be noticed….!! I would be glad if you can take some time and pen down about the movie.

Another question, why was the servant not shown in the movie…?? I am not interested to see the servant..wondering what could be the logic behind it, I know that villains were not shown in Sarkar and Sarkar Raaj for a reason and you have explained that in the blog, I couldn’t relate the servant to the villain.

My biggest question is – Do you regret making that film? As I cannot digest that you have apologized to the media for making AAG and Nishabd…!!

Did you have any other actor in mind for the story….??

Have you ever considered working with Anil Kapoor..of course in “My wife’s murder”, but directing him?

  22. @Naughty person

No the world is not revolving around you – so consider your request granted before you even asked :P

  23. You said all the barking dogs were thrown out ?? Ok. Why do you think most successful people in the world have sad/messed up endings ? May it be MJ or NTR or those living legends like Myke Tyson, or Maradona etc ? Might be your buddy Satyendra also.

  24. A piece or a line on songs ? I’m a filmmaker wanna be and i’m stuck so bad when I even think of making a 4 min song with out having any specific thing to tell in it.

  25. Haaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwww…boring!!!!!!!!!!!
    Please write something interesting Ramu..

  26. I am planning for a tele film due to budget problem.
Please tell me whether it is good or a bad idea.

  27. Pls share more on camera as pen.. Waiting

  28. I am confused – how do you gauge the impact of a scene by character placement?

I like the scene you posted from company, a linear placement might not have worked for me – but really the impact of the scene would not have been lost even if some placements were different from what they were. I later went and re-visited some of the other scenes on you tube, like the one where Antra goes to devgan and asks him to let go of chandu and a few others. I also noticed that within the same scene in a very short span different prespectives are shown – this I am assuming is the job of the editor – and its not just the placements of characters but these different shots of independent characters that cause the overall impact.

How do we know what placement would work best for a scene, and how do we know it would create the best impact? Of course experience and experimentation count, but I have seen a lot of shots where characters are dispersed across the frame to give an illusion of being in company of many people, why is this so important?

    Trying to learn.

  29. Btw when is RANN releasing?? Pls tell

  30. @Naughty person

You are not being naughty – just melodramatic and needy.

  36. From Company Movie -
Mouth se dar tha hi kya? mai kisi se nayi dartha. After this dailog, the camera shows each face around there and finally Mallik smiles, just touch the face (a little slap) to Chandu, and immedialy sounds comes – an immpressive sound. How did the idea came??

  37. Hi Ramu

Would love to hear in your words the way you adored Sridevi. Is Rifle somewhere on the line Sridevi?

  38. Would love to hear in your words the way you adored Sridevi. Is Rifle somewhere on the lines of Sridevi?

  39. In the movie Shiva… When Ganesh (bhavani’s gunda).. meets shiva in a hotel.. and asks him about withdrawing from politics or something.. shiva punches him in the mouth.

in this scene.. the camera is placed behind him.. at his knee level.. ans as soon as he get punched.. he is forced backwards and his face is right in front of camera.. when this happens.. ILAYARAJA.. gave a vary excellent violin music in the telugu version.. its mesmerizing.. but in Hindi that music bit is not there.. but there is mere silence.. to say.. the silence had more effect about the intensity of shiva’s choler..

just wanted to say.. ILAYARAJA will be remembered by me for his background music.. more than his songs..

just listen to his intense music in ANVESHANA.. its spellbinding..

  40. for me…..DAUD n AAG r ur best films till date…..for they taught me, what not to do while making a good film!

wud b interesting to read an article abt lighting from u. i noticed SARKAR’s house had no tube lights!!!…….did u use artificial lights in the scenes of SARKAR n SARKAR RAJ where light comes in frm the window….or were they shot in natural light?

Do you develop camera language in your mind when you read the script ? Or do you do it instantaneously and spontaneously on-location ?

Also, do you believe ” One is what one reads ” ?

The line in company where Shreenivasan says to Mallik at police station ” Aap hi ke liye toh hum yaha bhaithe hai ” made me applaud the writer’s sacrasm, it had a huge wave of undercurrent tension in it. Could you please tell me how you and your team came up with that ?

    Ramu,
I noticed, in your recent “My Reactions to Recations” you seem to be respecting your bloggers’ comments more. Do you think the bloggers have grown up or you just decided not to harass us ?

How did you like the movie: ‘Bandit Queen’, I think it’s a master piece and we Indians should be proud of that movie. You can find this movie in almost every video shop of the western countries.

BTW, the other day I went to a remote video store (in Australia) to rent some DVDs, there I was happy to find your movies Shiva & Satya !!

  55. I read somewhere in this blog, you don’t like cricket. Can you please eloborate on this ?
As for me, I go thru the similar kind of emotions (child like joy from winning/ utter disspointment from loosing ) from cricket in exact same way to that of gambling or playing cards, betting
or winning an argument with friends about movies and convincing them :-) .

  56. Hi Ram Gopal Varma,

This is a great site and a great blog. You are one of the best Directors of India. But dont know what happened lately I strongly feel there is a certain bogey of people in Bollywood who are dead against you? Is it true? Do you think there are camps? Do you think it is possible to kill a movie even before it hits the theaters? Do you think there is a concerted effort by some vested interests to cut short people who are against them? Do you think there is a sustained campaign to target some artists? You know I always felt that the intelligence levels of the people in film industry is very less, except for the few genuine artists, this is resultant of competition, jealousy, hatred, oneupmanship games,..you know all that shit!!! Sorry I am a conspiracy theorist!!! I strongly believe that US was aware of 9/11 attacks!

  57. Your reaction is BORING this time….

Ramu, may be many people took your advice and found something worthwhile to do rather than commenting on your blog and you are left with “losers” (as you call them) who have turned blander :)

  65. Now I know what my earlier comment would make me, looooooserrrrrrrrrrrr :)

  66. Arun D Khilnani says:

    RGV,

Background score helps the director carry the emotions of the emotions of the viewer in the direction required. But do you think that silence can too be a potent tool for carrying the emotions in a particular direction ?

Like in Bhoot there was a prolonged silence and then a sound of the doorbell which fucked me to death(wow!), also during watching that scene, I felt it was the silence which build up my emotions of being restless, anticipated and nervous.

In my opinion, it was the silence which helped create more horror than that sound of doorbell. Man! Still when I think of it, it gives me goosebumps!

    Any reaction ?

Ramu already wrote an article named ‘The strokes behind Rangeela’. You will get all info from there.

‘Munna’ is inspired from a thug who was with ramu in the college days. Ramu was his ‘chamcha’ and he was a guy with a golden heart. The character is inspired from Hyderabad itself, somewhere near sidhartha eng. college..he…he……not from Mumbai…Ramu just tranformed the character’s culture from andhra to mumbai. Thats it…………..

    with love………Vaishak………..

    A. Proposing to Satya to express your love interest
    B. make love with Rifle
    C. have a last supper with Sridevi (with due respects to Sridevi)
    D. Kill autojaani (for asking this question)
    E. None of the above
    F. A, B, C except D (for asking a genuine question)
    H. Is there anything that you wanna achieve this week, that you didnot achieve yet?

Moreover, Which book/DVD would you keep close to heart just before dying?

  92. I think Raktha Charithra would create a “new standard” in Indian Film History. It will surpass your previous benchmarks Shiva, Satya, Company and Rangeela.

  93. Did you realize that You and Hitler share same birth Zodiac sign?

Co-incidentally you both are influenced by F. Nietszhe

If Hitler was responsible for killing 30 million people, You are responsible for making 30 million people mesmerized and crazy through your films SHIVA, SATYA, RANGEELA, COMPANY, BHOOT, SARKAR etc etc

  94. Rangeela is a sense less commercial love story. What do u say ? Atleast when compared with Satya and Company thats a sense less movie. Right ? Rangeela, Satya, Company… How do u rate ?

  95. Do you know anyone who never failed in his/her life…both personally and professionally ?

  96. hey ramu! i just saw a few videos of ur interview for a telugu news channel TV 5. the show is called ‘Encounter’. if i had been in ur place, i would have got frustrated for not getting my point across after umpteen attempts. i’m awestruck by your strong mind, which is a result of the clarity of your thought. it’s really difficult to deal with people of such low IQ, who have problems understanding the truth. i’m sure everything you told him went over his head… he was irritated, frustrated and what not… he kept on trying to provocate you… people really hate you.. most people i’ve come across hate you because they cannot relate to ur attitude and think you are the best of example of ‘how not to be’.,and i think thats the funniest part because you are the most genuine person i’ve ever seen or heard of. u are truly as pure as an animal… or atleast u r the closest a man can get to being an animal!

  97. keertichandra says:

yes ramu what u said is right . when i go to the questions that people ask u. i sometimes feel that they only ask u question only to slap u on ur face and at the same time u give the answers in the same manner.

but how can u decide which questions are scrap and which are not scrap unless u read them.
so u can ask people to throw some valuable questions. so that when people like me read the answers we will also get satisfied

  98. If you find most of the comments boring, inane and irritating, all you have to do is ignore them, deleting them is simply ridiculous. We find many of your films inane, boring and irritating, but we do not call for them to be banned.

  99. Arun D Khilnani says:

    RGV,

When you were younger, in your twenties, and freshly out of college, did you ever aspire to be financially rich ? I remember a post of yours ” The Point of Money” a few months back about money being a potential energy and can be used only when made kinetic. But apart from that were you ever attracted to money as an end and not a means ? When you were younger, did you ever get swayed by your uncles, aunts when they told you how good financially your other cousins were doing ?If this is not to personal, please react.

Lets say some guy, with no minimal experience nor the knowledge of technicalities but with great eye of imagination and passion to make cinema, knocks your door asking for assistant director chance, Will you take him under your umbrella???

Just like Shashi Kapoor said in Deewaar ” Mere paas Maa hai”, This aspiring director says ” mere paas Maa “imagination” hai aur Baap “passion” hai, will you acceot him??

Ramu, what is your thought on this ? To which amount of degree you think a villian be sucessful ?
    Hero – 50% and Villian – 50% ?

  128. Hi Ramgopal,

Good to hear from you after long time. I am fine and hope the same with you. I am still the old Paripurna, easygoing, fun loving, short tempered as usual and running around with friends. Haven’t changed a bit. We were expecting you for Alumini last year and that was the reason I was there to meet you after a long time (nearly around 25+yrs). I remember you telling me that you are planning to visit Australia around May. Have you been and gone or haven’t come yet. Would love to catch up with you while in Australia. I have come down to Aus around 20 yrs back and now call this my home. Want to go back but could not with the kids as they want to settle down here. My wife and I are helpless in that matter as we are soft with kids. They are grown up and in year 11 and year 8. They don’t mind being with me in India, but don’t want to live there. So have to wait and see where life takes us from here. I have tried to contact you on your mobile number you have given me last time. Did get through. If you have any plans of visiting Aus please let me know and will catch up with you and dig out B7 and B8 memories in hostel. My mail id is paripurna@in.com and my contact number is +61422131100 (mob) +61393631313 (home) +61396694463 (bus). Drop a line or call when you are free. Good to hear after a long time. All the best.
