Dustbin Fortunes

Cycle I

When I was hanging out around Annapurna Studios trying to get a break, I used to attend the music composing sessions of “Collector Gari Abbayi”. In the course of those sessions whenever its music director Chakravarti and the director B.Gopal used to go for lunch I used to chat up with the music director’s assistant and once in a while he used to sing tunes which he himself composed. I was very impressed with many of his tunes and one day I described to him a scene from “SHIVA” the way I was intending to shoot it and I asked him about what kind of music he thinks should be there in that scene and he replied that there should not be any music in that scene. I was mighty impressed with the answer especially as it came from a musician and I committed to him that if ever I get a break I will sign him as my music director.

Finally when I got the break I suddenly had this opportunity to get Ilayaraja. So with a lot of guilt I told that assistant that I won’t be taking him for the film as I am getting Ilayaraja. He was obviously very disappointed but said that he understood the situation and wished me all the best. But because of the time I spent with that assistant and the association I developed, the guilt was killing me and the moment “SHIVA” became a big hit I went back to him and signed him for my second film. That assistant’s name was Keeravani (also known as M.M.Kreem) and the film I signed him on for was “Kshana Kshanam” which I think along with “Rangeela” are my best musical films till date.

A keyboard player used to be working for Keeravani and I used to interact with him a lot especially when he was doing the background soundtracks and I always believed that he can be a very good music director if he ever tries which he used to deny saying that he is technically not a composer. Much later when I had a problem with R.D.Burman during “Drohi” (Antham) and I could not get Keeravani as he was busy, I forced that keyboard player to do one song in that film.

Both the song and the film didn’t work but later on when a film with megastar Chiranjeevi came up I told Chiranjeevi that the “Drohi” song didn’t work but I really believe that the keyboard player is very good, Chiranjeevi said that if he was good enough for me he was good enough for him. The keyboard player was ecstatic and after a great fanfare launch the Chiranjeevi film got shelved due to various reasons which I can’t tell now and the poor keyboard player was devastated. But on the strength of the impression Chiranjeevi developed on the keyboard player due to a song he recorded for my shelved film he gave him another film called “Choodalini Undi” which firmly set the keyboard player well on the way to be one of the top music composers in the Telugu film industry. The keyboard players name is Mani Sharma.

Cycle II

When my first film “SHIVA” was ready for background score there was a musicians Union strike in Chennai and so Ilayaraja and me shifted to Mumbai to get the score done. A musical team chosen by Ilayaraja in Mumbai saw the film and one particular violin player from a group of violin players walked up to me and said that this film will create a sensation. Technically that was the first ever compliment I have ever received from an outsider in my career. After that me and that violin player used to chat once in a while through out the period while the background was going on.

A few years later I signed R.D.Burman for “Drohi” and I went to Mumbai for recording a song. Those days I used to operate from Hyderabad and kept flying up and down to Mumbai. I again bumped into the same violin player in the violin group. After telling me how happy he was for “SHIVA’s” success which he predicted, he brought a guy and introduced him as his closest friend and told me that he is a lyric writer. That guy gave me a visiting card. I put the card in my pocket and in the evening returned to Hyderabad and completely forgot all about it.

Like I told you earlier, as I fell out with R.D.Burman due to various reasons which I can’t tell now, I had to record a song with a new music director Mani Sharma in Chennai.

As I was leaving for Chennai in the evening, my mom brought in a bunch of visiting cards collected over a time to ask me if she can throw them away. I quickly glanced through them and I just kind of registered the card which the lyric writer gave me before telling her to throw all the cards away.

By the time I landed in Chennai I got news that Javed Akhtar who was supposed to come with the lyric to Chennai is not coming as he got stuck in some work. I got cheesed off and I told my guys in Mumbai to send some lyric writer or the other in the night itself as I didn’t want to cancel the recording. I was told that none were available. As I was getting flustered I suddenly remembered the visiting cards my mother showed. So I called up my mom and asked her about it and she said that she already threw it in the dustbin. She searched for it in the bin and luckily found it and gave me the number. I immediately got that lyric writer flown to Chennai and he wrote the song for “Drohi” composed by Mani Sharma and the recording was done.

Both “Drohi” and the song bombed but because of that association my relationship with that lyric writer continued and whenever I was in Mumbai, me, the violin player and the lyric writer used to meet up once in a while and at that time I was just beginning to work on the idea of “Rangeela”. When I mentioned the story to both of them, they got very excited and the violin player composed a tune for which the lyric writer wrote a song. I was very impressed with both and committed to both of them that they will be doing the music for “Rangeela”. They were thrilled to bits.

A few days later Maniratnam made me hear the songs of “Roja” at his home on Chennai and I was simply blown away with the orchestral brilliance of A.R.Rahman. I got too greedy and at any cost wanted to get that sound in my film and went back on my commitment to the violin player and signed Rahman instead, which understandingly left the violin player in a very angry and a heartbroken state. The lyric writer pleaded with me not to do that to his friend and I said it is just a professional decision in the best interest of the film.

I spoke to Rahman about the lyric writer and told him that his first song didn’t work but I do believe that he is very good. Rahman said, “If he is good enough for you he is good enough for me”.

Thus that lyric writer named Mehboob came into “Rangeela” minus the violin player and the first song he wrote was “Tanha Tanha”. I played that song to Maniratnam and he was mighty impressed with the fact that he hasn’t heard a song since a long time which didn’t have the words dil, deewana and sanam and signed on Mehboob for “Bombay”.

With the super success of both “Bombay” and “Rangeela” Mehboob got a very big name and credibility and using that he recommended his closest friend the violin player to Sanjay Leela Bhansali who was looking for a new music director for “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” and thus was born Ismail Darbar.

After the tremendous musical success of “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” which also timed with a couple of Rahman albums not doing well including my own “Daud” Ismail Darbar was the new musical genius on the block. I called Ismail Darbar up to congratulate him and he didn’t pick up my calls.

Later on Ismail gave an interview where he said that now that he is a success, everybody is calling him including Ramgopal Varma. That was obviously his revenge on the heartache I gave him by dumping him from “Rangeela”.

Both the close friends Ismail and Mehboob who were responsible for each other’s careers broke up after “Devdas” due to various differences which they didn’t tell anyone and both went on a decline in their respective careers and now after years sometimes when they try to call me to patch up and bury the hatchet I don’t pick up both their calls as I moved on to a new set of people and I don’t have neither the time nor the inclination to dwell on old time relationships.

Anyway the point of this whole article is that I am just so fucking fascinated with how the cycle of fortune keeps on throwing people in and out of dustbins.

PS: I just signed Mani Sharma for Rakta Charitra and am planning on to take Mehboob as the lyric writer.

  1. Hey first comment!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  2. First timer Mahesh worked for a film called Preminchukundam Ra! He only composed the tunes and couldn’t record them. Then Mani Sharma recorded the songs for the film and also the re-recording work and thus Ramanaidu, the producer of Preminchukundam Ra! impressed with him and introduced him as Music Director with the film ‘Super Heroes’ which is followed by another Ramanaidu’s film ‘Ganesh’, for which re-recording got rave reviews.

And then Chiranjeevi signed him for the film ‘Baava garu Bagunnara’. Chudalani Undi happened much later.

Mahesh, Manisharma and A. R Rahman used to work as keyboard players with Music Director duo Raj-Koti.

Devi Sri Prasad is a keyboard player, used to work with Manisharma.

  3. and I am second to comment.

  4. “After the tremendous musical success of “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” which also timed with a couple of Rahman albums not doing well including my own “Daud” Ismail Darbar was the new musical genius on the block.”

It is because of Rahman’s music I watched Daud on the first day of its release.
I dont know on what basis you are saying couple of Rahaman albums didn’t do well.

  5. First timer Mahesh composed tunes for the film called Preminchukundam Ra!. He couldn’t record the songs and Mani Sharma recorded the songs and also done the re-recording work for it. His work impressed Ramaniadu who is the producer of the film and he introduced Mani as Music Director for his next film ‘Super Heroes’, which bombed at boxoffice.

Ramanaidu signed Mani Sharma for another film called ‘Ganesh’, which is a hit and got good reviews for the re-recording work done by Mani Sharma. Then Chiranjeevi signed him for the film ‘Baavagaru Bagunnara’.

Mani Sharma is famous for his re-recording work than the songs. He may introduce new sounds to Bollywood also.

PS: Mahesh, Manisharma, A. R. Rahman were keyboard players with Music Director Duo Raj-Koti.

Devi Sri Prasad was a keyboard player with Mani Sharma

    Mahesh is no more.
Mani Sharma and Devi Sri Prasad rocking the South Film Industry
A.R. Rahman rocking the whole world.

It is the opportunity that decided their fate and also a death.

  6. you have chosen mani sharma when his career is on a decline!! That’s a brave decision. The truth is that we the telugu audience have got fed up listening to the sames tunes churned out repeatedly by him. Hope he does justice to you.
What’s with this news about ‘Aadhi’ being the lead actor for raktha charitra in telugu? He looks like Mohan Babu’s illegitimate son…

  7. Test

  8. thanks for choosing mani sharma for the film…i am a great fan of his music especially background score….his score for pokiri was terrific and was best in telugu movies till date

  9. Good one baby… raktha charitra in telugu and mehboob as lyricist???

  10. Hoping for fortune is like hoping to drive a moped at 100 kmph. Have a better bike, high speed is possible easily.

  11. Poor Ismail Darbar[:(]

Morale of the article: Whatever be your feelings towards someone in your profession, never wash dirty linen in public. Always praise someone and act humble, even if he is a bitter enemy. The chances of your downfall will become less.

    Am i not right?

  12. Why do some Music Directors give their best work to certain directors? Also, do u insist on Orignality of tunes from your Music Directors?

  13. If you don’t place your feet firmly on the ground, you’ll end up like Ismail darbar….poor fella, even Sanjay Leela Bhansali abandoned him. He has nowhere to go…

  14. @dinesh

he(ismail) appeared on few tv shows as a judge alongside himmesh…even those show producers are not approaching him now..really poor fellow

  15. Did you hear the lyrics of Gulaal. These lyrics sound so powerful that they dont even need a singer or a background score to make the listener sense the intensity.

Its impossible to find a better person than that guy to write lyrics for RC.

If I was Mehboob, where you signed me up and then wrote and blog about my decline, I would screw the lyrics, but prove to you that they are my best work….

Understand that just because you are ok with popping in and out of dustbins and people talking about it…. not everyone is that insensitive. May be the people still matter to them. May be they still have normal man’s feelings. Anyway…

So Mr. Jerk… best of luck – Most importantly read the lyrics of Gulaal…. rather than listening to them and then feel the genious in them…..

  16. @madhu19
it doesn’t really matter who the lyricist is in a telugu movie these days. 90% of the songs have crappy lyrics….. mehboob can probably do as good a job as many other telugu lyricists

  17. Hi RGV

    Every dog has its day!!!

Everybody gets their fifteen minutes of fame!!!

it is so symptomatic of entertainment industry!!!

the only constant shud be change..innovation…constant innovation..will keep the wheels moving..otherwise people are doomed to go into dustbins..as u have put it. ..

so we have the rationalist believe in fate and destiny!!!!..:-P..just kidding…

    Cheers

  18. Some good “behind the scenes” coverage…interesting too while being non-polarized. Keep up the writing Ramu… we want to get to know you and your background more, minus the barbs and put-on ego parade.

nd glad to know that even u feel GUILT !! like normal people.

    Dear Ramu,
I was waiting for your blog hungrily. This is like delicious chicken biryani served after five days’ starvation…he he…In fact, i really appreciate your courage in telling original incidents and you tell them in a very ’story’ kind of style.

I thought you involved in ‘raktha charitha’ works so seriously that you would never write another blog till the film shooting ends….Fortunately you came back.

    Regards, Vaishak…..

  21. Finally……….Some stuff to our thirst………

  22. Nice post.
For a musician, I believe, he should be a far sighted person and have his own path craved ahead not settling for one thing like film music. People like Ustad Rashid Khan, for instance, who have their own classical path in the long run and once in a while sing/compose for filmy music.
Profession is on both sides, director and a musician. If the deal clicks, work together or not they both have their own paths ahead. Why heartbreaks and hard feelings !

Thank you for sharing, RGV . :)

  23. hmmmm…………. good .

  24. Well, nice story and i could smell a nice screenplay outta these cycles ;)

And, i remember many a times in interviews hearing u would never want to work with chiranjeevi !
Now, i am shocked to read that u actually tried to ??!!

However, i know chiranjeevi is a piece of shit, but what actually made the film evaporate ?

Now be brave and tell us what happened ?

  25. Ramu,

Some people (including me) will pursue their jobs just because they want to make their living out of it. In the due course, they will earn some materialistic things, which includes money.
But, if their innermost voice says that their real interest is something else and it pleads them to try out their own interests.

Any thoughts on this, how the real convergence between pursuing their own interests and livelihood happens?

  26. How to resolve the conflict between making the livelihood and want to pursue their own interests?

  27. @Ram Gopal Varma

I cant believe ‘gundello dhada dhada’ song flopped at the BO. I love that song. Around 1993, in Kakinada, electronics shops to demo that song in the music systems to impress customers. I have that song on my iPod.

I have a question for you.

Sometime ago you said that you despise religious people and hence don’t believe in god. What about the people you admire and are more talented than you and still believe in god?

In my opinion, beliefs have nothing to do with talent. Believing in god doesn’t necessarily imply mental weakness.

    Hoping for a reply

    -
    Vamsi

  28. I am surprised that you did feel guilt. DO YOU STILL FEEL GUILT? WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT GUILT?

  29. On that note, the brilliant story telling of Satya I think over shadowed the brilliant sound track. “Badalon se” is pure ecstasy in the way it was written, composed and shot.
    - Sriram.

  30. This kinda reminds me of the classic quote from “The Alchemist” [ "Dont promise to give some one something which you dont have already"] :).

Fuck off ur bloody cast feelings … bastard

  35. I liked (and still like) ‘Kshana Kshanam’ for characterization, acting, shot composition, music, and a constant breeze of freshness throughout the movie. Lyrics and music are top notch.

Did you ever set a goal to do Sridevi and did you achieve it? Of course, getting her to act in your second movie is by itself an achievement. Do you mind sharing your filmi and non-filmi experiences with Sridevi?

In spite of counting this movie as your best musical, what is the reason for not getting Keeravani to work you again?

How was your experience working with Jandhyala for Govinda Govinda?

Was it Sridevi’s idea to make a movie with Chiranjeevi under your direction? What went wrong with the movie?

What went wrong with your production ‘Mahatma Gandhi Autobiography’ under JD’s direction?

    Did you do Sridevi?

  36. “Chiranjeevi film got shelved due to various reasons”. Please tell atleast one reason……..

Because want to know whos fault was that either yours or chiru?

  37. Ramu,
Can you please give venue details ..of Raktha Charithra launch in hyderabad ..pls.

  38. Nice to see that you roped in Mr Sharma for Raktha Charithra….after “Raat”..

  39. I think Suriya is very excited for getting chance of working with you….How abt you?

presently he is one of the brilliant actors in south india….hope we will do good in Hindi too…

  40. Ramu
Can pls list out other technicians and actors of raktha charitra?

  41. Which scene you described to Keeravani from “SHIVA”??

  42. Ramu,
You were never a great fan of rich music. May be you go with the trend … how commercially successful the music composers are. The following statement from your own article “After the tremendous musical success of “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” which also timed with a couple of Rahman albums not doing well including my own “Daud” Ismail Darbar was the new musical genius on the block. I called Ismail Darbar up to congratulate him and he didn’t pick up my calls” tells all that very clearly. Otherwise like Maniratnam you too would have been very conscious about who is composing music for your films.
Of all the films you have made so far, only Rangeela and Daud (not Rangeela & Kshna Kshnam) have the best music ever in your entire film career (let’s not bring the great Ilaya Raja here, b’coz even though he is known and of course he is, the genius of Indian music, still if you clearly notice that he produced the best music constantly for only few directors repeatedly. For example: Vamsy, K.Vishwanath, K.Balachander, Mani ratnam, Balumahendra and may be very few others on and off)
You don’t even know what are your musically well done films (I am not talking here about the commercial success) and you compare Rehman with Ismail Darbar’s success !!! Whatever Ismail Darbar produced so far never sounded like music at all for me so far.
“PS: I just signed Mani Sharma for Rakta Charitra and am planning on to take Mehboob as the lyric writer”.
Like the way you are capable of making really good and really bad films, I am sure you do the same thing with selection of music composers for your films. No wonder!
I only hope Rakta charitra is not going to be as flop an idea as your selection of music directors. Anyway all the best for your impulsive decision taking! Hmmmmm people make decisions…they don’t take decisions :)

  43. What exactly went wrong making a movie with Chiranjeevi. You are already told by one of the TV Interviews but not convinced way. Anything you can share more about this??

  44. Hey Ramu
I have been reading ur blog frm ur first article but this is the first time I have braved to comment as something really surprisedme….u said u felt guilty when u signed Ilayaraja instead of MM Keeravani…I am wondering how does GUILT go with ur kind of philosophy which revolves around u and yourself only, how do u care if u took Ilayaraja or MMK, ur goal was achieved in getting the best music dir for the film!!!???

  45. This is a wonderful article…never knew a trash can make careers!! I knew about M M Keeravani, but Mani sharma’s introduction is certainly an enlightenment!

  46. @riche_riche24, well said :)

I am wondering how does GUILT go with ur kind of philosophy which revolves around u and yourself only, how do u care if u took Ilayaraja or MMK, ur goal was achieved in getting the best music dir for the film!!!???

plz go through this link to know how crazy are people are about your movie shiva.

also plz post the scripts of your movies shiva, sathya, sarkar, sarkar raj……

  48. RGV,

What was your involvement in making of movie ‘D’ other than producing it? Vishram Sawanth justified whatever the material he got or prepared. That was an excellent execution. It mesmerizes audience entire movie and I liked the drama. Yes, it is perfect prequel for the movie ‘Company’. I am curious to know your involvement in it.

  49. You said that u were blown away with the orchestral brilliance of A.R.Rahman sir.You also said that RAKTHA CHARITRA will be the most well defined film of urs because of the CONTENT u have with u.So if u have 100% confidence in ur story why not opt for A.R.Rahman.I respect MANI sir very much and i am not saying that he cant give the desired music.Just imagine LORD OF THE RINGS TRIOLOGY music by someone else with some other tunes. These tunes and BGs may appear good but none can imagine other musicians in the place of HOWARD SHORE.He has given apt music and it certainly is a defnition for the film.

I think RAKTHA CHARITRA is a story of revenge and rising. The sound(BG) for these type of emotions is some what loud.It is very difficult task for the music director to balance this loudness with melody. At the same time it should be unique as well as catchy.Even a minute mistake causes murder to the music.

So with all confidence i can say ARR is the best one for RAKTHA CHARITRA .

If ARR is busy then no one can do anything about it.

  50. “…..later on when a film with megastar Chiranjeevi came up….”

Hmm I think megastar in the above statement was meant to be sarcastic….am I right?

  51. “….after a great fanfare launch the Chiranjeevi film got shelved due to various reasons which I can’t tell now….”

Now? Do you mean to tell later?

  52. Keeravani, ARR, Mani Sharma….

You mentioned all 3 of them…what made you sign up Mani Sharma?
Can you explain your reasoning behind casting of RC?

  53. So, Mehboob might come back….ok, we might also see Ismail coming back….uhhh
    “What goes around comes around..”

  54. I don’t pick up both their calls as I moved on to a new set of people and I don’t have neither the time nor the inclination to dwell on old time relationships.

Why write about it now? isn’t that a timewaste again??

  55. PS: I just signed Mani Sharma for Rakta Charitra and am planning on to take Mehboob as the lyric writer.

I think you want 2 see how we’ll react for choosing the above ppl. especially, Mehboob…

  56. But I’m glad you wrote a new post despite being very busy with Raktha Charitra and a Wedding in the family.

  57. @63 Siri

Moreover Mehboob might come back……so who picked up the call this time?

  58. interesting read dude.

  59. How different is Telugu Raktha Charitra going to be from the Hindi version? Is it the same cast and crew in both versions??

  60. Watch RGV’s interview on Zee Telugu at 9.00pm (Laxshmi talk show) i.e Thursday, who ever interested……..

  61. Do you continuing that revenge with Ismail Darbar????

It means you are taking it personal.

    May be……………

  62. in the opening scene of SHIVA the name of the college is VSR degree college.i think u just reversed the name of u r engineering college VRS engineering college am i right????and i also belong to the same college and again congrats for 20 yrs of SHIVA(05 oct 1989 -05 oct 2009)

  63. HDDSS music is great but ARR was not in declining phase at that time. He had super duper hit music in Taal. Both music albums are released around the same time and were great hits.

    Just a note.

  64. @RGV

whats in it ?after a long time now u r willing to take mahboob again..and may be you will take Ismail Darbar next!!!!?

  65. cycle of fortune keeps on throwing people in and out of dustbins

Did you ever realize that apart frome being ??good you are damn lucky. If there are no success/hits in between your failures you would have been in the dustbin permanently.

  66. You don’t keep your word. You con people to get what you want. Do you belive in ” being honest, being truthful”? Do you believe in any thing other than being “selfish” ? How can you be happy being alone and selfish? Are you a psycho (appearing normal) who doesn’t have remorse, guilt getting what you want by whatever means but just afraid of law.

  67. Narendra Varma says:

One good article. I always wondered why RGV didn’t work with Mani Sharma again, coz both are very famous for the Background Scores of their films. Nice to hear that Mani gaaru is composing for Raktha Charithra.

Since mani sharma’s name popped out, I wanted to ask u one question. How did u like his work in “Baanam”? How did u like “Baanam” as a movie? It’s ok if u don’t wanna answer that. Please atleast tell me how did u feel about the cycle chain scene being recreated in the movie Baanam? Since that scene in Shiva is very personal for you I just wanna know how you felt like when u watched it in the movie for the first time on 5th of this month.

P.S. : The director intended that scene only as a tribute to Shiva.

  68. Ramu

Awesome Story……i always loved your personal stories, stories about your experiences with time, people and life…..

As always…..best of luck for your Rakhtha charithra….

  69. one of the questions and answers in september

    19. Goodness is useless if you are selfish. Deep down you want us to think you are good in a way. It’s a game you are good at. Now I only want to smile at guys like you. You are brilliant. When will you really gain wisdom? When will you stop running?
Ans: Forget me. I think even Nietzsche will get a brain hemorrhage trying to understand what you are trying to say.
Jokes apart I think I kind of maybe got your point.

WHY DO YOU WANT US TO THINK YOU ARE GOOD? YOU DON’T CARE WHAT OTHERS THINK ABOUT YOU. DO YOU????WHY DO YOU PLAY THE GAME OF WANTING US TO THINK YOU ARE GOOD? DID YOU REALLY GET HIS POINT?

  70. It’s better to be away from people who can’t understand you when apologised.

  71. Faith is a cop-out. If the only way you can accept an assertion is by faith, then you are conceding that it can’t be taken on its own merits.
    - Dan Barker

  72. That was interesting … now how about the whole slue of directors now ruling the film industry in Telugu and Hindi who were under your wings at one time?

  73. you’re an ASS ;)

  74. ‘Mani Sharma’ for ‘Rakta Charitra’ is a good choice.

He is very good and proven experience in composing great back ground scores for FACTION backdrop movies.
I hope he gives a “complete different sound” with the “same faction background score scence” he has for RAKTA CHARITRA

  75. Ramu, is making a committment necessary at all? We are fixing certainity when life by it’s very essence is uncertain. You can say you are the frontrunner for the music in my film and leave it at that. Until the time comes to start, the decision is open to a lot of possibilities like what if the film had to be shelved or you died or you liked someone’s music better like you did or something else happened.

  76. When it comes to music/songs in your films, Naach has hit me hardest than any other film.

  77. Would like to know why did you fall out with the late RD Burman .. He was the greatest and the most innovative music composer in the indian film industry till the arrival of AR Rahman . In ‘92 when Drohi was released RD was in decline and suffering from ill health . Was that one of the reasons’ why it didnt work out between you ? Please can you explain what went wrong in one of your future blog posts .

  78. Good to see Mani scoring for your film.
BGM plays a big part in your films, and Mani always sits in the top league of BGM composers.

I am sure he rocks with both BGM and songs.

And, as someone already mentioned about Mani’s song in Antham, it is not a flop.
I saw electronics shops playing that song to impress customers on the device’s sound.

  79. u seem to be doing a lot of “kiss him kick him kiss him kick him….u r not professional since u r greedy for u r profession…i want to know if what u r doing is good for healthy industry ??? i feel maybe u r correct since the best work will be the output…but u can avoid those shock surprises to the ppl by requesting them denial …coz u may not knw when u need the person again….
“end of the day business matters”

i heard for kshana kshanam ilayaraja was also pissed off with u since u dint have a word with him and gave him a surpise by not choosing him ??? Already we saw in many interviews ilayaraja is very emotional ….if ppl dont maintain relationship and keep in touch he gets very hurt..i think its pretty easy since u cud hv gone to him and politely told some beautiful lie to deny and then still maintain good relation ;)

  80. HI Ramu,

    Nice post.
Luck, fortune or whatever people call it,in mathematical terms its just probability theory, The probability of Javed Akhtar not making it, and the probability that no other lyricist could make it , and the probability that your mom could find the visiting card on that day was the probability of signing Mehboob for that song.
Bottom line is if you keep trying and dont just sit at home, you have a probability of making it no matter how small it is.

    –Amit.

  81. Like it or not ,Into History or the Dustbin..
How many cards did mom throw into dustbin?

  82. Yes, M.M.Keeravani is indeed a musical genius. Among the current generation of music directors he is the ONLY ONE in Telugu who can consistently produce some real soothing melodies.

  83. Ramu – One question that’s battling my mind for long is:

What’s the difference between “celebrity” and a “Legend” ???

P.S. After watching “Telugu Cinema Vajrotsavams”, I got even more confused !!!

    :))))

  84. Ramu,
I love the songs from “Antham” very much. ‘RD Burman’ really gave to awesome tunes. Every now and then I still tune in to listen “Antham” songs. They don’t bore me at all..
Why did you have difference with him ?

in fact the “Gundello Dhada Dhada” song wasn’t as good as the rest.

  85. ARR had a rocking album TAAl in the same year it was bigger hit than HDDCS.and ismail became jobless in movies because people started to hate him as he once said that his work was always better than rahmans only a foolish bastard will talk like that and he has paid for that so now he has no movies and so he is participating in big boss 3 to gain some attention

  86. Crappy post !!!

Not at all amusing to anyone I guess… May be it’ll do a little harm to YOU professionally and USELESS to everyone else ….

Please do not respond to so many requests here about chiruanjeevi’s shelved movie.. It will just ignite a blame game …….

Will be USELESS to everone again…

    Waiting of something more interesting…

  87. Waiting for something more interesting…

  91. Big Boss 3 should have had you, Ismail Durbar, Gulzar, Urmila, Manoj Bajpai, Anurag Kashyap, and three item girls.

Even Big Boss 4 could have all of you. But by that time the wheel of fortune would have rendered the combo meaningless or more meaningful.

If people become totally professional and understand that decisions are taken for the best interests of the film/final product, they would become robots.

Its surprising that there are no comments about karma and destiny yet.

It looks like RGV can dump people, but vice versa is not true. This previlege is just reserved for your girlfriends

  92. Oye by the way, why was the post “Remote Terrorist” removed? I thot you had signed Vivek Oberoi for Raktha Charitra? And now it will be in telugu and not in hindi??

  93. Ram Goapl Verma in big boss 3
ram gopal verma was considered for big boss 3 ..ramu big boss ke ghar ka daura karne bhi gaye ..phir unhone mana kar diya …said too much of light aur kaafi saaf suthra hai mera dum ghut jayega.

  94. What Is Intelligence, Anyway?
    By Isaac Asimov

    What is intelligence, anyway?

When I was in the army, I received the kind of aptitude test that all soldiers took and, against a normal of 100, scored 160. No one at the base had ever seen a figure like that, and for two hours they made a big fuss over me. (It didn’t mean anything. The next day I was still a buck private with KP – kitchen police – as my highest duty.)

All my life I’ve been registering scores like that, so that I have the complacent feeling that I’m highly intelligent, and I expect other people to think so too.

Actually, though, don’t such scores simply mean that I am very good at answering the type of academic questions that are considered worthy of answers by people who make up the intelligence tests – people with intellectual bents similar to mine?

For instance, I had an auto-repair man once, who, on these intelligence tests, could not possibly have scored more than 80, by my estimate. I always took it for granted that I was far more intelligent than he was.

Yet, when anything went wrong with my car I hastened to him with it, watched him anxiously as he explored its vitals, and listened to his pronouncements as though they were divine oracles – and he always fixed my car.

Well, then, suppose my auto-repair man devised questions for an intelligence test.

Or suppose a carpenter did, or a farmer, or, indeed, almost anyone but an academician. By every one of those tests, I’d prove myself a moron, and I’d be a moron, too.

In a world where I could not use my academic training and my verbal talents but had to do something intricate or hard, working with my hands, I would do poorly.

My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in and of the fact that a small subsection of that society has managed to foist itself on the rest as an arbiter of such matters.

    Consider my auto-repair man, again.

He had a habit of telling me jokes whenever he saw me.

One time he raised his head from under the automobile hood to say: “Doc, a deaf-and-mute guy went into a hardware store to ask for some nails. He put two fingers together on the counter and made hammering motions with the other hand.

“The clerk brought him a hammer. He shook his head and pointed to the two fingers he was hammering. The clerk brought him nails. He picked out the sizes he wanted, and left. Well, doc, the next guy who came in was a blind man. He wanted scissors.

How do you suppose he asked for them?”

Indulgently, I lifted by right hand and made scissoring motions with my first two fingers.

Whereupon my auto-repair man laughed raucously and said, “Why, you dumb jerk, he used his voice and asked for them..”

Then he said smugly, “I’ve been trying that on all my customers today.” “Did you catch many?” I asked. “Quite a few,” he said, “but I knew for sure I’d catch you.”

“Why is that?” I asked. “Because you’re so god damned educated, doc, I knew you couldn’t be very smart.”

And I have an uneasy feeling he had something there.

  95. Hi Ramuji!

I am a diehard fan of yours and a regular visitor to your blog. I wanted to make this post in response to your post on Nishabd(A SILENT Shout), but found time only now that I have l lost my job(Software Engineer, victim of recession :-(

Anyway to connect my comments to your present post, you claim that “Kshana Kshanam” which I think along with “Rangeela” are my best musical films till date”. I disagree. That credit should go to Mast, which is not only your best musical, but your best film in any genre. You have said in an interview that songs should take the story forward, and I think that is more the case with Mast than with Kshana Kshanam or Rangeela.

I watched Mast during my college days at a Chennai multiplex. I went there with a friend to watch some other film, and when we couldn’t get tickets for that movie, decided to watch the only film for which tickets were available(Mast). I entered the theater without even knowing who RamGopal Varma was, and absolutely loved the film so much that I came out an RGV fan! After that, I caught up with your earlier works starting with Shiva, Raat etc on VCD and have not missed any of your movies since(Agyaat has not been released in Chennai yet, so haven’t watched it).

Technically, and narrative-wise, Nishabd is a better film than Mast, but Mast still remains my favorite. Nishabd shows the progress you have made as a filmmaker in the intervening years. Afterall, applying Antoine Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s maxim, “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away”, Nishabd was chiseled to perfection, where not a single scene or character was superfluous to the story, while in Mast, the character of Aftab’s sister’s friend(Nikki) and the sub-plot of her love for him is unnecessary for that feel-good cindrella story, because even at the happy ending you feel a bit sorry for her.

I think you are at your best in the romance genre(Mast, Nishabd, my most favorite films) and then the gangster flicks(Company, Sarkar) and only after that the horror film genre(Darna Zaroori Hai, Raat etc) Somehow, your horror films don’t scare me, In fact, your only film that scared me atleast somewhat was Raat, and that might have something to do with the fact that I watched it alone in my room, after midnight(I normally watch films in theaters with my friends)

And your blog is just as entertaining as your movies. I say this in particular because, I was a huge fan of Mohanlal. I still am. But after reading some of his interviews, I lost some of my craze for him. I now get the feeling that he is an Average Joe who just happens to do one thing(acting) exceptionally well, rather than a genius through and through, whereas in your case, my admiration for you has only grown after I started reading your blog and interviews.

Eagerly awaiting Rann and Raktha Charitra!!

PS : One day I will make “Vinod ki Mast” with 20 songs, without the Nikki character and the sub-plot of her love for him and with my dreamgirl, the most beautiful woman that ever was, is or will ever be, Kamna Jethmalani in place of the ugly Urmila – my tribute to RGV’s eternal classic :-)!

  96. Hi Ramu,

Before getting break as a director to whom you worked as an assistant?

  97. For those guys who are intrested why chiru film called off with RGV. This is the version of Dutt garu , who is producer of that film

Aswani Dutt started two projects with Chiranjeevi as Hero in late 90’s. One was under direction by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao and another one was with RGV. Due to some reasons, both projects were shelved and later they released this album. In an interview Mr.Dutt told that the movie with RGV was stopped because the story had some similarities with DAUD (which was directed by RGV himself) and that was already released by that time. And another movie was shelved due to weak storyline where Singeetam supposed to be the director.

, Now RGV you should comment about this !

  98. prahul realised says:

I have seen you in your Relative Suman’s marraige in Hyderabad. I was no way realted to it, just came knowing that you were coming. good to see you with jagapathi babu, subba raju, J.D. and that wonderful batch.

  99. how come Mehboob is calling you to patch up? you didnt fall out with him did you? anyway good decision on taking Mehboob for your next film..He is a very good lyricist.

  100. Sir,

Your blogs are so informative. Its really interesting to know what happened in the movie industry (esp Telugu) back in the 90s. Please keep blogging. Except for the occasional sensationalist statements, your posts are a treat to read. In your list of technicians whom you’ve discovered I would like to add another name – Sandeep Chowta. Though he might not exactly be your “find”, I think he got his big break from your movies. Though not a musician, another technician whom the industry noticed after you’ve worked was cinematographer Kiran Reddy (of Naach).. Its great that you are able to find the “matti lo manikyam (pearl amongst sand dust)”..

    Best Regards,
    Allu Sirish

  101. Ha Ramu thx for the article

    Who wrote dialogues for kshankshanam?

venki s friend speaking to venki

era kompadeesi aa ammai ni love chesthunnava alantivi pettukovaddura

    finish ayipothav.

  102. Ramu

make chiranjeevi act as rajasekhar reddy s character in RAKTHACHARITRA

anyway i heard MOHANBABU is in NTR s role.

And one more thing ramu… y u got prb with yashchopra camp like yash chopra,

aditya chopra, karan johar and SHARUKH KHAN. same like in tollywood

u got prb with CHIRANJEEVI camp.

Do u think .. going against to that biggies… makes u more popular and bigger?

  103. Its strange to hear a word called “Commitment” from you!

Reading some of your posts, I feel you are kinda emotionally attached to Telugu film industry. But you either don’t like to reveal that or not find it important for others to know that you owe something to them.

In the Keeravani episode, I could feel the intense when you wrote “the guilt was killing me” . How powerful could have been your association with him? And more importantly, he was able to deliver what you really wanted from him in “Kshana Kshanam”! I had fallen in love with Sridevi after watching that movie:-)

You too rose from a dustbin when your were laid off from the Assistant Director position.
I think its equally important to be on top even if you are in the dustbin so that somebody can pick you up!

  104. U shud sign YUVAN SHANKAR RAJA for a movie…what do u say ??

  105. kalyan_chakri says:

i guess Mohan babu in Late NTR role in your raktha charithra may not help it out…instead you must have picked kota srinivas rao…Mohan babu is a crap out of crap.

  106. I could be a dustbin fortune pls let me assist u for raktha charitra :)

  107. nikhil.rgvfan@gmail.com says:

chi chi chi dont you have sence why you picked manisharma to compose RAKTH CHARITRA…ayyo anna he suits only for BALA KRISHNA and CHIRU films we got bored to listen his music you should have taken Ilayaraja, rahman, sandeep chowtha any of these three….I think again ur going to give a big flop and keeping a big flower in all ears like ur AAG…This is the film for which whole telugu people and telugu film industry is waiting…Koncham manchiga theeyi concentrate cheyi….and one more thing is u have not anawered my previous question which i have asked u 1 week back……reply me soon…

  108. Interesting anecdotes. But you have never answered one question – Why not Ilaiyaraaja, when he has a fantastic sense of mood music? His grasp on Background score is amazing and your films rely a lot on background score. So Why not Ilaiyaraaja?

And what was the reason for break-up with R.D.Burman? I think Antham/Drohi was also one of your best musicals (although it was not a musical as per definition, it had an assortment of some outstanding numbers)

  109. Hmm Sirish is also follwing this blog :O

Great Going guys. very happy to interact with you guys directly.

  110. hi RGV just want 2 ask u that, wat happened 2 u and u produced the movie james.
i mean ur a very brilliant director so why did u made a movie with such a boring story.

  111. Ramu, Why did you remove the blog post “The Remote Terrorist”. I read it and wanted to read for the second time.. I can’t find it now.. Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  112. venkat_rgvpichodu says:

Why some people too much luckyest(A.R.Rehman) and why some not ( Ismail Darbar) ?

If you want to give free suggestion to Ismail which can helpfull to his career and etc , what is that ?

  113. venkat_rgvpichodu says:

What you will do if you loose your Name, Fame and wealth ?

  114. @Allu Sirish – Man I have read your blog, Its cool as well :)

  115. Ramu,

What is the song in ANTHAM (DROHI in Hindi) that was composed by Mani Sharma?

  116. venkat_rgvpichodu says:

    do you have Fear ?

  117. Mani Sharma composed background music for RAATHRI and ANTHAM.

Mani Sharma gave a good music for BAANAM….there are couple of scenes where he gave music similar to ALIEN, PREDATOR especially just before the railway platform fight.

Last week, RGV watched BAANAM in iMAX and I guess that background music made him to go for Mani Sharma again.

  118. Ismail Darbad is “classical and traditional” based music director. He suits to movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas. I saw one Ajay Devgan’s movie DEEWANGEE where Urmila plays singer role. The songs were not catchy. I am glad Ismail Darbar did not give music to RANGEELA. (by the way DEEWANGEE is the copy if hollywood movie PRIMAL FEAR).

  119. The only underlying reality of life is ‘probability’. Probability is God… it determines everything for anyone… it is probability that the visiting card was still lying in the dustbin.. probability that you heard AR Rahman in Manirathnam’s home… probability that Amitabh was selected for Zanjeer…

  120. Manisarma is excellent music director and he is great in terms of Back Ground Score, for a movie like this strength, he will do wonders. We were all like to suggest you his name. But feared of your comments!!!

    Regards
    Vasu

  121. Can you tell us the reasons for shelving chiranjeevi film? …some time later

  122. Hope you will again work with Ismail Darbar, but his music does not suits in your films may be his violin

  123. how to make a day precious?

  124. where did you get nietzche books .

  125. which is the worst incident in your life?

  126. Can you write anything about sirivennela sita rama shastry as well?

  129. Ramu

Are you going to draw any similarities/copy scenes for your Raktha charithra to that of the film made by maniratnam’s “IDDARU”?

    Cheers
    Sree

Nikhil ur words “ayyo anna” & the line” a big flower in all ears ” were very humourous. I had a good laugh.
    Ramu,
I share the same expectations as Nikhil’s and all RGV fans. You’ve been concentrating more on dailogues and less on action. I expected a lot of action from your Sarkar and Sarkar raj. They were good but there was very little action. Shiva and Satya had terrific action. My whole body used to vibrate (pulakintha in telugu), the stabbing scene in Satya (where JD stabs Bhau) gave me a big thrill. “Revenge scenes” such as those, if incorporated in RC will give us a high.

  133. “I don’t have neither the time nor the inclination to dwell on old time relationships.”
“I just signed Mani Sharma for Rakta Charitra and am planning on to take Mehboob as the lyric writer.”

Then even Mani Sharma is old…. Why do u prefer him?

    ______________________________________________________________________________

“Chiranjeevi said that if he was good enough for me he was good enough for him.”
Rahman said, “If he is good enough for you he is good enough for me”.

How come both of them say the same sentence…as it is… ?
Really happened or you just wrote, as it is nice to hear….

  134. Hey RGV, long time since u posted one. I am so impressed with this. I know you don’t mind a reader being impressed but let me accept the truth. I believe the name RGV which actually gets so much gratitude than respect is for the reasons you have mentioned. Most of the Tollywood folks identify themselves as your followers although u never accept that. Anyways the post was really very interesting!

    Jyostna

  135. Ramu Please change site colour layout. It is hurting eyes.

  136. What a Blog I simbly love Mani sharma Keeravani’s music But y didnt u recieve calls 2 of ismail Darbar and Mahboob. I spoke to Rahman about the lyric writer and told him that his first song didn’t work but I do believe that he is very good. Rahman said, “If he is good enough for you he is good enough for me” Then y u didn’t u receive Calls of both Ismail Darbar and mahboob as u were the one who played a pivotal role in their dustbin fortune. But now u have taken Mehboob lyric is a good thing as he is a good talent. but there was not point of Ismail darbar not receiving ur call as u didnt help him out of ur professional reasons but u helped his friend so there was not point in not recieving ur call he can even take it Professionally it is Obvious even more Dangerous incidents to lot of talented people .The horse out of which people make lacs or crores of rs once the horse got any permanent problem with its leg then it is of no use no one will take care of it. It may even get killed. In that sense Ismail Darbar was quite luckier some one Like Ram Gopal Varma ! was calling him. :) whatever ur rude harsh or whatever but i love u and sometimes i love 2 hate u (But i love u more because u live for urself not for the f****** society :)

  137. You chose the best music director Mani sharma for Raktha charithra….I hope it would become a good combination….

  138. Ramu,
Till now, I thought you were the bravest man on the planet, who can speak straight forward without any inhibitions. But, you too practice diplomacy? Why you avoided telling what happened between you and chiranjeevi, and between you and RD Burman? What are the reasons that “you can’t tell now”, and why?

  139. hi ramu sir In my life i had meet probably 10 guys with ur sir name and what i observed is everybody in that set has some kind of audacity in them do u think it is inherited ?
    waiting for ur reply

  140. u said u dnt feel any guilt in ur life because u deprogrammed urself that way then y did u feel guilty at that moment????????????????????????????????
i know ur like me u ridicule ur statements and dnt take life seriously…………..lolz
dude i wanted to ask u a question why are porn actresses better looking and have nice figures than mainstream bollywood actress???????
in a way they are more hot n sexy than bollywood actresses anyday….
tera kya khyaal hain bhai usme?????????????
which are ur fav movies apart from mackennas gold and godfather????

  141. In ‘lakshmi talk show’ Ram Varma said that he liked Magadheera and that it matched hollywood in production values etc etc…
Inspiration is different and copying is different.. inspiration is Sarkar for example.. the frames etc were very different , the story and the characters were inspired… Magadheera scenes had NO creativity… utter total copy from 300…. same is the case with Nayakan where an important killing with the guy hitting the car windshield is an exact copy of Godfather… very few telugus might have watched 300 and hence the director just took the chance and copied 300 scenes…

  142. There is a clear pattern. Who worked with you are still doing good, who moved away declined.

Is that what you intend to project?

Good to know that you launched the careers of 2 good telugu music directors.

  143. HI sir, i am sravan from Andhra Pradesh
actually i am pursuing MCA , sir actually i have good (IMO) scary story script , if U want to listen once , i will mail U.. sir

    Thanks alot..

  144. Vamsi_Krishna says:

Hello Mr.Ramu, Glad to hear about Mani Sharma and Keeravani’s career association with you. Your usual way of revealing things made this article interesting.

I am glad that you are having M S as the music composer for Raktha Charithra, I some how feel MS’s music has become monotonous!! of late, I wish he changes some of his typical musical instruments and singers which brings a “routine” feeling to the listener. I am hoping to listen to some dark melodies from your combination!

The other day I was listening to his latest album and felt very annoyed with his instrument usage and felt like giving my opinion to him on that album, anyway, I know I cannot do it. But hey, may be I can use you as a medium to convey my reactions to him…no doubt he is a great composer…but he should refrain from copying tunes and stick to his originality…

Please let me know if you can convey this to MS on my/his fans behalf Mr. Ramu!!

    Vamsi K.

  145. RGV .. i think u got embarassed to tell about that US Gal in ur college on the show. why doont u diclose it here. if u can :)

  146. RGV in Lakshmi Talk Show…

    1. There was an episode with Dr ANR, in which Sushanth comes as a guest. Later, at the time of leaving, Lakshmi wishes him all the best for “Current”.
Well this episode was telecast much after the release of Current.

    2. In another episode, Ravi Teja and Lakshmi talk about “Kick”…but his latest release was Anjaneyulu.

BUT, RGV’s episode was telecast just days after he arrived in HYD. Hmmm….
    I guess…………..
RGV wanted Mohan Babu in his film RC, Mohan Babu wanted(along with many things) RGV to appear in the talk show of his daughter. I haven’t watched that episode yet, but I bet Lakshmi will talk about her father’s role in RC.
    Self Dabbaaaa…..

One more interesting thing that I have noticed is that all most all the ppl who appeared in that show are anti-Chiranjeevi in one or other way…….

    ohhhh mannnnnn………phewwwww

  147. Cycle I talks about South India and Cycle II talks about your bollywood days. It appears, things were better for you in the South.
Or have you deliberately highlighted the nice things about tollywood industry cause you are making a Telugu movie??
Or simply were in the mood as you were walking down the memory lane while working in Hyd after a long time and it brought all the good memories back and you wrote it in a flow.
sorry…its just my interpretation. Taking a break in work and found nothing better to do.. :)

  148. Now I admit..your blog is addictive.

  149. My views on Lakshmi Talk Show…

    1. Almost all the people who appeared are anti-Chiranjeevi in one way or the other

    2. RGV wanted Mohan Babu for RC. In return Mohan Babu wanted(with many other things), RGV to appear on his daughter’s show. I haven’t watched the show yet, but I bet Lakshmi will rise about her father’s role in RC(she did this on the shows with DR Dasari, DR ANR, Jayasudha…)
    Sontha Dabbaa….

    3. My reasons for saying the 2nd statement…..

In the ANR episode, Sushanth comes as a guest and while leaving, Lakshmi wishes him all the best for “Current”. Well, the show was televised much later after its release.

In another episode with Ravi Teja, they both talk about Kick as his latest one. But his latest movie was Anjaneyulu.

So, this episode of RGV was televised just days after it was shoot. And I also bet, RGV wasn’t completely okay with appearing on the show.
But you are compelled to do things in Telugu film industry whether you like it or not.

Ever wondered why a particular actor(who doesn’t belong to any hierarchy of families) acts in some silly, stupid roles after doing a much worthy one? which is completely opposite to the one earlier?

hmmm….Power is in the hands of few people.
“Power must not be given, it must be taken”

    phewwwwww……………………

  150. Nice Questions Siri, i thought of asking the same Q .. in next comment.

Nice to hear from u RGV that you Liked magadheera.

RGV, Puri And RM – thrimurthulu (3gods) in elevating hero’s image in their own style.

Can you comment on puri and RGV on elevation of hero’s characterization , if u can :)

  151. typo …

Can you comment on Puri and RM on elevation of hero’s characterization , if u can :)

  152. ohh man , what a wonderful pics at the end of the show. why dont u collect and put them up here.

the pic , which u are on horse is really like magadheera :P

  153. u are so pleasant on Lakshmi show.. i thought she will become one more victim ,but not :)

  154. ……………….

  155. Wheel of fortune yes it is………

Lakme didn’t obviously get it. She simply moved to next question ….

  157. Good to know that u have had an association with so many geniuses….Please do write us about your association with Brahmanandam. You are the one who portrayed him in an unconventional roles he hasnt done till Money was released. Please do write a blog on Brahmi. Thank you.

  158. Sri: I am surprised that you didn’t work with Ramu after Kshanakshanam though it was a really big musical hit. Your next combination was after long W/o V. Varaprasad on his banner. Why was that?

Keeravani: Actually, I worked for another film with him. Not a complete film but just a song ? gunDellO daDadaDalaaDE merupulatO… (Antham). I was also supposed to do BGM for the film Raat, but there was a dates clash that prevented me from doing that and he was upset…

  161. Tell us about the Cast and Crew in your future film “RAKTHA CHARITRA”?

  162. Ramu Please make a movie with
venky and please cast him for a b`wood movie.

    All the best.

  163. Ramu bhai,

I am just wondering why do you need lyricist for Raktha Charithra. I hope the songs do not intterupt the intensity and flow of the movie. Moreover, I hope songs are in the background.

In the movie Antham, I felt that songs were the main culprits which disturbed the intensity of the movie.

  164. Ramu bhai,

Was “Khan Dada” character in MONEY inspired from Annu Kapoor’s canteen boy character in TEZAAB?

  165. Oh my God.. I have seen many of your interviews but the laxmi talk show has really blown me away.

  166. It is very nice to see and know about your family on talk show. I can see, you are little emotional when you see your mother on TV. Nice interview so far. A Big Cheer for you.

  169. Ramu,

Just watched Lakshmi Talk show and just loved it (especially it was worth watching you when your mother and daughter were talking). You looked very happy in certain moments.

I’m kinda very relieved after listening to your daughter speaking about you. Good to know your sweet relationship with your daughter. Your look and smile when you turned towards her (probably she was sitting in audience if I’m not mistaken) was awesome.

  170. Hats off to Lakshmi Manchu. I have never seen RGV smiling or laughing in any of the ineterviews before. Also it was nice to see so many people (friends and family) talking so many nice things about RGV.
RGV, I’m sure you must have called Mr.Lagadapati Rajagopal for leaking out your secrets. :)
BTW, who is that girl form the US?

  171. just saw lakshmi talk show. it was good. So you are married and you have a daughter…………that was a surprise to me………..

  172. Hi ! RGV,
It makes me laugh when you say that “kshana Kshanam’ and Rangeela are your best musical films. I think you have not yet experienced the music( including Background score)of your own film ‘Shiva’.

  173. hi annayya

u are too cool in laksmi talk show , i have expected a bit of aggressive expressions on your face during the interview but u r tooo cool , and there are no punches from your side in the interview y so cooooool?

i watched u r laxmi talk show.intially,i felt laxmi was a bit sycophantic but by the end of the show,i felt, she was successful in showing us the other side of ram gopal varma.
its the first time that i could see someone(uttej) talking about u r wife,u r mother came out for the first time n u r daughter’s audio byte was a real show stealer.
i really enjoyed u r expressions when jagapati babu said that u were jealous.also, the photos at the end were really gud especially the one where u were sitting on a wall n thinking something.
p.s:in the same show some months back when nagarjuna was asked to choose his favorite director amongst rgv n raghavendra rao, without any hesitation he chose raghavendra rao

  180. Please write one article on your association with Manirathnam. Did you know him before”Shiva”??

  181. Ramanna,

    Awesome as usual.

  182. Ramu bhai,
I enjoyed watching your interview on “Lakshmi talk show”.
Surprised to hear your daughter calling you by name. You are first Indian father I’ve seen so far in my life, whose son/daughter formally calling by name.

One of the valuable things I learned from your BLOG is to talk with a humour. Not just talking, but also look at life, (especially the tragedic part of life) and understand it in a humorous and in a comedy manner .. .

I guess talking with humour comes from confidence and confidence comes from achievement or a having a sence of “nothing to loose” or “nothing to gain” … or have immense knowledge

  183. Pradeep Maddy says:

    Ramu,

Want to know your association with “Sirivennnala Seetha Rama Sastry”…

  184. Ramu,

Just watched Lakshmi talk show and simply loved it. Its worth watching you especially when your mother and daughter were speaking about you.

I’m kinda very relieved to c your sweet sweet relationship with your daughter ( I thought she hates you so that she doesn’t even talk to u… heheee). The look and smile you gave turning all the way towards her (she is probably sitting in the audience if I’m not mistaken) was awesome.

More impressed with you. And your fotos are …. hahahaaa

my friend always wonders about you that being having every skill to make a hollywood film still u r here is only for silmply wasting ur time!!!!!!!

  190. Talk show with You by Laxmi Prasanna, on ZEE Telugu , was like having a South Indian full meals Dinner.

It was like a feast for me…and all your fans across India.

Her questions were very sensible and rational.

I get irritate when these Film Journalists screw up the interviews by ‘ I Win – You Loose ‘ kind attitude…anyways on such interviews you too screw them…that’s a different thing :-)

  191. y dont u work with rehman again it would b great

  192. Hey
Whats up with ‘Rann’ got stuck in the cans? Thought this would be releasing in Oct but no promos either on TV. Hope it comes out soon

  193. hi RGV garu,

i hails from hyderabad,,i dont say iam a big fan of yours….naturally a man without having interst cant leave any reply/Message..

    1. Everyday we talk about you/think about you. In my college days there use to be a Bus no 1…in that there was a conductor who use to look like you. “Like if we want to go to naryanguda,,,we can go in 86 no but we use to talk like ,,,dude let us go in RGV bus ,,so that we can see Rgv in the morning and go to the college…we are 2 guys who are so crazy about you…” and your movies…in telugu,,,we are proud that you are rocking in Bollywood,,but we are missing the flavours of movies in telugu…i think there are plenty of youngsters, female fans and familes offcourse they dont like you ,but few are looking forward to see your movies.

I Would be sorry for not saying you thanks ,,,it means i might have taken something or u might have taken something from me….because want to share your blog for life time ,,,so no thanks …

    Bye RGV.

  194. Hi Ramu
Guess thats called cycle of fortunes.. I live in London..and recently i saw your interview in Lakshmi talk show.. I was quiet impressed with what you said in the show.

Your are not only a film maker..but a good business man… You had a pretty easy entry as director.. as i could co-relates to you saying normal you got to be assisting for 10 years before you could become a director in film industry.or anyone could even think of giving a chance. it was true in my dad case as he had assisted K.Balachander for 10 long years before he could become a director.. with pratap art productions….

    Raghu

  195. Nice sharing on blog..! So for manisharma and varma it would be first movie RAKTH CHARITH.

  196. good post!

  197. Hey Raghu..who havent said ur dad’s name….i m so anxious to hear it…pls dude let me know…jai ho My Guru RGV

  198. Sometime ago I read an article about Ramu’s biggest flop of life wherein he explained how he failed by aggravating his mother’s mourning by donating his father’s eyes after his death, which she liked very much.
While watching Lakshmi’s Talk Show, I saw his mother for the first time and found that Ramu has his father’s features which in turn aroused my senses that he might actually have the eyes same like his father. So I thought his mother would see her husband’s eyes in her son’s eyes.

P.S: Can someone tell me where can I find that post. I remember reading it in some other website.
But I couldn’t find it now.

  199. Till I saw the talk show I did not know that Ramu got married and has a daughter.
@RGV, are you still a family man?

  200. @Narender,
It is in RGV’s old blog in Sptember 2008 posts (posted on 9/9/08). You can follow this link.

  201. I was surprised to hear that you liked Magadheera. Dint you feel that there was too much lifting from hollywood ?

  202. Why are you hiding revathi, your daughter from entire world.? Are you scared of media diggings?

  203. After reading your opinion about women and marriage, it looks like you either wrote or inspired the song ‘Badram be carful brotheru .. barthaga maaraku bacheloru …” in Money Money!

  204. The best part is Ramu that you are a pakka behenchod and you never hide it. its really hard to come by such brutally honest -dishonest perdson like you these days. Its not about you being a good or bad film maker but as a person the way you attack the ’system & society’ without fear and favour, makes it difficult to ignore you. many times i decided not to come to your blog but since your blog offers the combo of sensation, titillating excitement on a platter and also fans my voyeuristic tendencies, its hard to resist.

  205. hi
I am new to this blog… need to know what rakta charitra is all about.
Is it an underworld flick like satya and company?

  211. i want to see your daugter !!!

  212. Hallo Mr RGV garu

I accept SHIVA is a great movie.

why don’t you try to do a movie … better than SIVA which we can discuss for 50 to 100 years…
    Some thing like…

how many days you will discuss about shiva (no doubt it is a master peace)

try to do some thing better than that

all the best for RAKTHA CHERITRA
    Citipolice

  213. Just saw you in the talk show with Lakshmi. I see you getting emotional while your mother and daughter were speaking. That was quite interesting. And regarding your comment on Magadheera you talk about its production values and say it was quite an attempt to reach Hollywood standards. To me it looked like a poor copy of Gladiator and 300 as far as the settings are concerned and the story was complete trash. I do not know what makes you say that in the next 10 yrs we wont get such a movie. What about movies like Swati Kiranam, Sagara Sangamam where the production cost may be less but the content just blows the audience away. What is your say on that kind of movies? I feel movies like them cannot be recreated. If you do not like such movies with traditional touch, there cannot be a match to Mani Ratnam’s “Iruvar” in the next 10 yrs. On the bottomline, what irritated me was you acknowledging ultimate crap like Magadheera, Pokiri

  214. Have u seen movie luck by chance. In one scene ,karan johar explains how a new hero is created?.Film makers weave story keeping in mind of leading actors. For some reason they back out at the last minute and makers look for a possible replacement by a new actor and new hero is created.
Mani sharma and keeravani is talented but same can’t be said about ismail and mehaboob.Mehaboob lyrics sucks and it had taken out the beauty of some of the greatest compositions of ar rahman. His lyrics irritates even a southie like me.
I believe ismails compositions are ghost directed by slb, that is the reason why he didn’t make any success further

  215. Can you tell us how you & Mani Ratnam meet each other & become friends & worked for some time also

  216. venkat_rgvpichodu says:

Ramu Honestly regarding Mehboob, I feel he was worst Lyricist to ever in Our films, specially in A Grade Big Banner movies, i dont know it was due to lack of knowledge the language or what, but he was an horrible choice from you and also mani sir!!! well mistakes happen and i am glad he is not more working i guess he own some fish aqauriuim in MUMBAI somewhere!! yours, priyans all also mani sir to an extent mostly chose horrible singers ,, like some numbers in Sarkar were pathetic with strong SI pronounciation syndrome,,,,,,

Since I missed the opportunity, would you please tell me which scene was that?

  254. Hey Ramu,

I became your over night fan after watching Satya. It is my best bollywood movie till date as it matched completely with by sensibility. I was really disappointed when I first heard that you are making a re-make of sholay…WAITTT A MINUTE… Don’t make any assumptions

What disappointed me is that a person who can be inspired by movie like God father and make Sarkar ,then why is this man getting so low to re-create sholay.. Just compare GOD FATHER- SHOLAY..There is no fucking class in sholay..Bollywood might consider it a legendary movie but in my opinion it was a C grade TV drama.. I hate masala stuff and this is one reason I don’t consider Bollywood any thing exciting.. But you changed my mind with Satya..

I have some ideas and concepts which have never been attempted in India..If you would love to hear just give me a silent whisper..I know you will think he is another wanna be but I can assure you will not regret

    Best of luck…
